Just one fix
When was the last time I rambled about media I consumed? I can’t remember. It must be in the far past. Like, two weeks ago. Maybe longer. Who knows at this point.
Genesis
Briefly listened to Genesis’ discography. Have to say I like the Phil Collins-era more than the Peter Gabriel one, probably because I’m usually more a fan of straight-forward pop and not artsy experimentations. But whatever. I’ll give the early stuff another try.
Roxy Music
One band I basically like everything from. It’s kitschy, smart, and sexed up. I wonder how the ‘sexed up’ part would fly today, some of the album covers - Country Life comes to mind - would have people freaking out. But what doesn’t freak people out today? Every bit of humanity in art is cause for concern.
Prince
Wait, I already talked about Prince. Whatever. Listened to Paisley Park the other day, still rocks. Cool stuff.
Ministry
Have been on an Industrial bender lately, downloading all the greats from Nitzer Ebb to Throbbing Gristle to KMFDM and many more. Some of I never heard before. Especially Throbbing Gristle’s 20 Jazz Funk Greats. Cool cover art. I didn’t know the peaceful scenery is also one of the most popular suicide spots in the UK. Ah welp.
But Ministry. A mind is a terrible thing to taste. Quite good. I mean, my intro to their stuff was
Psalm 69, specifically Just one fix, which I still like today. Actually, I’m going to listen to it right now.
Elie Wiesel
I talked about Primo Levi’s If This is a Man the other day, and Eli Wiesel’s Night is next up on my list. Both talk about experiences in Nazi concentration camps, sadly a timely topic.
Hotel del Luna
Hey, what’s another Media Stuff post without talking about K-Drama? Basically nothing! Yes, Hotel del Luna stars IU, famous K-Pop super-singer, as the manager for a super-natural Hotel. Super-natural as in ‘for dead people’. On their way to the after-life. Can’t say much, too early to tell. IU’s acting is spotty, sometimes not so good, sometimes her intelligence and whimsy shine through.
Dead Kennedys
Only knew Holiday in Cambodia and California uber alles. I didn’t know that most of their famous stuff - including those two - is from their debut album, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables. A spat between Jello Biafra and the other members eventually tore the group apart, but on that debut everything works in unison.
Chuck Schuldiner (from the metal band Death)
I knew Chuck Schuldiner died early, what I didn’t know is that a better healthcare system could have saved his life. Too broke to get healthy. What a fucked up world. Viva USA!
