From the Witcher to the Weapon

I watched some stuff, and had some thoughts about it. I wrote them down, so this blog doesn’t go stale. And lest I forget how to generate the banner image, because that involves plugins and a complex arithmetic only the wise men in a distant land know.

Alien: Earth

Yeah, that’s OK. I like how everyone is super-dumb and ignores the obvious safety regulations, including the super boy genius who is modeled after Peter Pan. Someone alerted me to the fact the story might be inspired by Lost Boy by Christina Henry. I guess it’s about Peter Pan being an asshole.

Weapons

Eh. I loved Barbarian by the same director. One of the smartest horror movies I’ve seen in the past ten years. But this? Feels like a Stephen King TV adaptation from the 90s. Langoliers, here we come. Well, it’s not that bad. But I thought it was bad. Definitely not deserving of the hype.

The Witcher (Season 1)

Watched this running in the background while drawing, audio only. Seems to be a very visual show, because the dialogue was basic as fuck. Superman actor talks like a gruff 1980s action hero, his voice gravelly like it’s been finely treated with whisky and cigarettes. I guess the FX must be OK? Otherwise why does this have so many seasons.

Clevatess

Anime, pretty rough at times. The target audience seems to be young adults, like the majority of Anime. But then it has those really rough story lines, that seem out of place in a young adult show. Well, at least by Western standards. The story of the maid who gets repeatedly raped since she was a teen, only to have her kids sold off to a dark magus? Hard stuff. The majority of the show is about sword and sorcery, the protagonist a demi-god like monster who can take on a human form.

The Black Phone

Ethan Hawke steals the show. Skipped through it, for the most part, couldn’t care. But Ethan Hawke is spot on. The story itself is by Stephen King’s son, if I’m not mistaken. He’s not named King, took on another name. Probably wants to step out of his father’s shadow, and the King name doesn’t help with that. The interview with the director on The Last Podcast on the Left is interesting.

When Evil Lurks

Argentinian horror film about demonic possession, very low-budget and kind of funny. The possession can jump from person to person to animal, which results in some hilarious hijinks. Didn’t finish it to be honest.

Apokalypse und Filterkaffee

German podcast about culture and politics, not bad. Was surprised by the quality of the hosts. Not stupid people! Although, that media roundtable I listened to a couple weeks ago had too many conservative pundits, and not many left ones. Maybe that was random? Or maybe I should research who finances this show.
