Special Valentine's Goon Day - R30 Issue #11

I’m busy writing the sequel to Datteln in der Bröselburg, so forgive me if I can’t pump out links at the usual rate. Today I rolled out of bed and fired up my feedreader, just to find new stuff to share.

And what did I find? Well, there was this one korean man who took his life-size doll to the amusement park. And everyone found it totally charming and clapped! Well, not really. Actually there isn’t much written about the public’s reaction. But we do have a quote from the doll-lover himself, who says “it was the best!”. Roller coasters, air ballon, and bumper cars… what a day. He used a wheelchair for transportation. So if you find yourself lonely this Valentine’s, just head down to the sex shop and maybe steal the wheelchair of your grandmother.

And because my brain works in demented ways, I can’t help but associate this story with an article about AI in the classroom, specifically an emulation of Anne Frank. When questioned about her Nazi murderers, she responded by not wanting to play the blame game, but to instead learn from the past. What? The reason I’m connecting this to the previous story is that in a couple of years we’ll have virtual robot girlfriends. Maybe with the personality of Anne Frank? I mean, why not. You could go on a date today with a simulated victim of the Nazi regime, while she’s engaging in holocaust denialism. Wild times. At least the bumper cars are fun.

And talking about Nazis. I continued my journey through 1930s politics by watching a documentary about Hitler’s appointment as Chancellor of Germany. Mind you, it still took a few historic events until he assumed the role of Führer a year later. But I’ll be writing about that in future newsletters. In the meantime, take a look at this global survey of fascism during the inter-war period.

Cars. There’s a sick new restomod from Modena Automobili, turning a 1990s Maserati Shamal into a… better looking version of itself. I notice some carbon on the outside, plus the cleaned up interior looks really tasty. 3.0 litre twin turbo V6 putting down 500 brake horsepower. Nice. Get yours for €585,000, only 33 examples available. I mean, I’d get one if I had the money. Beats looking at ads when your Jeep stops at a red light. I tell you, we will all start lusting for the 1990s by the end of this decade.

Or what about the 1980s? Specifically Blade Runner? Forgotten Weapons took a look at the prop gun for the original cyberpunk movie. The Pfläger-Katsumata Series D 5223 showcases that sometimes you need two triggers to get that one replicant. Its initials are PKD, as in Philip K. Dick, the writer of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. The short story the film is based on. For that one person who didn’t know. I still think about PK Dick from time to time, and his weird clairvoyance episode that Robert Crumb turned into a comic.

In terms of electronic entertainment, there’s a new Pokemon rogue-like that streamers are playing. All you need is a browser. Which you are using right now. So go over there and collect some Peeble Pobbles. Or whatever these things are called, I never played it. Alternatively, Dwarf Fortress released it’s adventure mode a couple weeks ago. I guess it’s less sandboxy and you actually need to complete some quests now.

Or maybe go to the museum? The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam offers its ‘first major survey of American Photography’. Multiple artists over multiple decades. The only American photographer I know is Vivian Maier, she’s pretty cool.

Let’s finish this off with some K-Pop. Jisoo released ‘earthquake’, a song I do not like. I mean, I don’t care. There’s so much bing boom bang in the video, that the music takes a back seat. Lame. Her fellow Black Pink alum LISA got accused of black-fishing. Those skin tones do vary a lot, but she’s not the only culprit in Korean entertainment. It’s like spray paint day every day.

Alas, we’ve come to the leftovers: teardown of the world’s worst ebike, ten watch trends, Jizz-wailer

Happy Valentine’s!
