From Framework to Cynical
I watched some stuff, and listened to some stuff. Yes, you might think it was from Korea. What other countries are there? I don’t know.
Miyeon - Reno
Wtf is this? It’s a single from Miyeon’s MY, Lover, the i-dle members latest solo comeback. Yes, this is K-Pop, do I still have to explain myself? Anyway, it sounds like a forgotten soundtrack from a 1990s Tarantino movie. With a weird monologue at the start, making me think whoever produced this really liked Johnny Cash’s line “I shot a man in Reno/Just to watch him die”. I don’t hate it. The first single from the album, Say my name, sounds a bit like a Taeyeon song, both when it comes to songwriting and production. If you like Taeyeon, maybe you like this?
Sunmi - Cynical
Sunmi returns, this time sounding like… Sunmi. Idk I’m getting a bit tired of that detached & tired vibe. At what point does it become its own joke? Like, you’re just copying yourself? If you’ve never heard about her, check out Noir or the Wonder Girls’ So Lonely. Noir has probably also one of the best K-Pop videos.
As you stood by (K-Drama)
Another happy tale from the land of the rising… depression. Idk, but this TV show has all the *cides - suicide, homicide, femicide. It’s a story about Eun-Soo, department store clerk who dreams big, and her battle with abusive clients, abusive family members, abused friends, and criminals. Pretty rough, but well told, will be checking back. Only watched the first episode, but the cinematography is nice, and there are a lot of topics but it does not get convoluted. Interesting that the guy denouncing abusive Korean men is a Chinese national.
Wednesday Season 2
Oh no. What happened? I loved this show in season 1, but this… idk what is this. Someone said it feels like it was written by AI, and I agree. Season 1 felt like a story woven by a single person with a vision. But this? It’s a patchwork, glued and stitched together. Very strange. Would like to know what happened behind the scenes. My guess is they started writing before the marketing department had a chat with them, in terms of who gets how much screentime, and who gets… resurrected. Eh. I’ll still keep watching that slop.
Running Man
I went to one of those sites who sell vegetables, thinking they had Running Man on offer. And they did. And I clicked on it. But then it turned out to be the old Running Man, with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Can’t trust those vegetable sites.
Valve’s new hardware line-up
Wow, it’s the Gabecube! Personally I like it when Steam gets more popular, they’ve done a lot for Wine (the Windows emulation layer). And as a Linux user, that pleases me. But what else? That VR set looks interesting, now the only thing that’s missing are interesting VR games. The controller is hopefully a bit better than the first one, I avoided buying that because it looked cheap. I like the placement of those touchpads. Looks more mature, as a product. The Gabecube itself is a Linux PC in a compact format. I mean, nice. The detachable front plate is a thing they copied from Framework, so congrats to Framework for starting to influence the industry.
Hyundai Ioniq 6 N
Fuck me, three tidbits not about Korea, but I can’t help myself. Here we go again. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 N is the sporty version of the Ioniq 6 family sedan. And it looks cool! Although they should sell a grown-up version without the spoiler. I’m never going fast enough that I need a spoiler. But apparently it’s not about the downforce, but about control. Ok. Anyway, we now have 600+ horse power vehicles that cost less than € 100k. Insane. I’d still choose the Ioniq 5 N over this, because it looks goofier. But they’re both very big, which I don’t like.
