Scenes from a Black Ocean - R30 Issue #4

I watched a bunch of movies over the holidays, most notably Ravenous, a 90s Wild West cannibal movie starring Guy Pearce and Robert Carlyle. It’s fun, and also qualifies as a christmas movie, since it has snow.

Alas I also saw a lot of crap. Rebel Moon Part Deux features on a lot of “Worst Films of 2024” lists, so I checked out the first part, having never heard of it. It was also crap. So there.

Terrifier was interesting, in the sense that it’s interesting that old-school slasher flicks are making a comeback. Not sure if I like the bad guy, he seems… too shallow? It feels like a joke about a mime gone wrong. Maybe the sequels redeem him.

9-1-1 Lone Star is a good show everyone should check out. It’s like a John Waters project played straight. Very weird. Zero self-awareness but ridiculous and pulpy, impressive.

But let’s get to the good stuff I haven’t seen yet. The Brutalist. Le Corbusier. Brutalism. Is it about Le Corbusier? That’s what I filed it under in my brain library. Maybe it’s about him without saying his name. Who knows. Instead of doing research, I looked at the 21 Brutalist buildings from around the world you should know about. Followed by brutalist speakers. And finished it off with a transparent turntable, because why not.

Maybe you could listen to some Zappa on that rig, followed by an exquisite watch party of Miami Vice Season 2 Episode 19, where the man himself appeared as a bad guy. Was a $1.5 million sound system on board of that yacht? Probably not. The 80s did not know of the debaucheries of the present. Well…

Cars. The Rodin FZero is a single seater that sounds like a 90s video game. With 1500 brake horsepower. They know their target demographic: Rich people with Nintendos. Maybe when you wrap it around a tree it looks like a cool sculpture created by Rodin.

K-Pop. Did LE SSERAFIM receive a BLACK OCEAN during their Gayo performance? Yes?! What is a ‘black ocean’? Read the above link to find out.
