Newtopia - K-Drama

Another year, another K-Drama. This time it’s Newtopia, a fun zombie romp through Seoul, capital city of South Korea. Yes, the K in K-Drama is for Korea. What am I writing? I think I still haven’t fully recovered.

Newtopia was released last year and features Jisoo, perfomer in the K-Pop group Black Pink, as a screaming and crying engineer trying to survive a zombie outbreak. Her being an engineer isn’t that relevant, it comes in handy once to advance a plot point, but whatever. Other characters include her boyfriend, some name I forgot, who serves in the army atop a luxury high rise, maintaning and operating an air defense gun.

The story bounces between the two, as they each try to find their way through Seoul so they can reunite. It’s pretty gory, and very slapstick-y. Laurel and Hardy-like at times, when boyfriend and his dumb friend fuck up missions and act like idiots. They’re both incompetent idiots and the oldest of the bunch, not getting a lot of respect from their army peers.

I would recommend this if you’re looking for a Zombie comedy with some romantic elements, although those are thankfully pretty sparsely placed across the episodes. You can also just fast-forward past them. They’re mostly flashbacks about their shared history, how they met, their relationship-challenges, etc.

It’s pretty funny and well executed, great to look at. They spared no expense. Looks high quality. Cars crashing in Seoul, Zombie mobs running through the streets, cool. Two thumbs up, check it out.
